BICYCLE STEALING AT WHAKATANE IS NOW VERY COMMON
Concern over the amount of vehicle converting, which took place at Whakatane nearly every week-end, was expressed by Constable R. F. Julian and Mr C, S. Armstrong, J.P., in the Whakatane Police Court on Monday when dealing with a bicycle conversion charge. It was an offence that was now becoming very common throughout the district, Constable Julian declared.
“Almost every week-end bicycles are stolen from the streets in the town,” he told the court. “In many cases the work of the police v/as made very difficult in tracing the machines. Parts were taken off and changed over to different frames, the registered numbers were filed away and with a bit of paint added identification was very difficult.” Bicycle stealing was not an offence the district could be proud of Mr Armstrong said. Steps would have to be taken to put an end to it. <
“While the punishment of the’ charge before me today is rather light all future sentences for this type of offence will be very much heavier,” he added.
