BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY’S ACHIEVEMENTS DURING PAST YEAR REVIEWED

A comprehensive review of the Whakatane Beautifying , Society’s work during the year ended March 31 last was given by the president, Mr E. R. Dillicar, in his report to a largely attended annual meeting last week. He attributed the success of the Society’s efforts largely to the loyal and hard-working committee, and paid a special tribute to the secretary, Mr G. Kemp. “The cherry trees in the Domain were twice cleared around arid with continued care and attention there is no reason why we should not have a very pretty cherry grove there in a comparative short time,” Mr Dillicar said. “One committee member has suggested to me that the 4 or 5 trees planted on the left side of the path as you go through to Goulstone Road could with advantage be transferred to the other side and I commend this suggestion to you for a favourable consideration. Haig Street was planted with flowering apricots and plums alternatively and these trees should be a very pretty sight in due course. “Trees by the Borough Council Chambers were pruried and cleaned around. Unfortunately they had grown too large to permit of topping. A working bee of some 25 citizens did excellent service in clearing from a part of the foreshore at the Heads and generally cleaning up during February and were rewarded by an excellent morning tea by residents. I would suggest to the incoming committee that the whole foreshore area might be cleaned up the coming spring. “During the year the membership of our Society has increased from a dozen or so to 99 due to the efforts of your committee and I look forward to a further large increase during the coming year. „ Election of officers: Patron, Mr W. Sullivan, M.P.; president, Mr E. R. Dillicar; vice-president, Mr R. S. Buttimore; secretary-treasurer, Mr G. W. Kemp; committee, Mrs Fenrell, Mrs Knights, Mrs Larsen, Mr O’Rourke, Mr Slipper, Mr H. W. Neal, ,Mr Fennell, Mr L. C. Richards, Mr K. Needham; auditor, Mr N. C. Hockin.
