OBJECTIONS BY THE BOROUGH TO HEADS QUARRY DROPPED

Objections to the proposal of the Whakatane Harbour Board to take land for a quarry at the Heads are to be dropped, it was decided at Monday night’s meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council.

The main objection of the council was the possible damage to electrical equipment from any blasting. The board had indicated that it did not intend to do any blasting, at which the council decided not to pursue the matter any further. Commenting on the proposal the deputy-mayor, Mr C. S. Armstrong, said he could not understand why the land was being taken and so depriving the borough of two good building sites. If the Board did not intend to blast what was the point of taking the land for a quarry? As the council’s main objection had been to blasting, the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, said he did not think the matter should be taken further. It appeared that all the Board wanted was to take rubble for reclamation purposes.
