ROD AND GUN CLUB NOW ON SOLID BASIS

Presenting his report at the Whakatane Rod and Gun Club’s annual meeting last night, the president, Mr J. D. Rivett, said he felt proud that it now covered the County officially. That in itself spoke of continued progress and expansion. “I feel, he said, “that our Club is now on a firm and fixed basis.”

A very healthy financial position had been assisted by amalgamation with the Taneatua Club. The financial statement showed substantial receipts (including £2097 14s 2d trap shooting revenue), and some big disbursements, including £339 18s 6d on trap houses, tracks and grounds, and £531 7s 4d ammunition purchases. “Members will feel gratified,” Mr Rivett remarked, “by the fact that, following the North Island Championship shoot, the overdraft will be wiped out, and the Club has now a credit balance of approximately £4O.

“The year has been a particularly active one for. all members, and I feel that all will agree that we have given the greatest encouragement to sportsmen. On July 10 and 11 last the Auckland Provincial Double Rise Championship and Open Shoot was held on the Club’s Grounds, and was in every way successful. I acknowledge again the presentation of the Thomas Davies Memorial Cup, and the Plamus Cup (Open Championship) which was donated . by Messrs W. C. Davies and J. Plamus respectively. Whilst the Davies Cup < for inter-club teams , competition) l.« not yet to hand, it is good to record that the Plamus Cup was won by Mr J. Shove of Opotiki, who is the first holder. Both these trophies will play a big part in popularising sport. I might mention also the Rivett Buttons which have been donated for Teams Competition amongst members. “The Club has been closely in touch with the Department in connection with acclimatisation work and we can assure members that fish and game has been stocked in all suitable parts of the district. At a special meeting of the local ranger called for the benefit of anglers splendid progress was made, and recommendations for the liberation of were igiven priority. “May I take this opportunity of once again expressing our deep appreciation of the splendid work of the ladies who have always been so willing to assist us in our activities. To the committee I extend my personal thanks for their loyalty and enthusiasm in club matters. I look upon my association with them all as one of my happiest memories of the year’s work. To members who have assisted me in any way I also tender my appreciation. I also want to take this opportunity of paying a special tribute to our secretary (Mr Ray Morgan).
