Power Consumption At Whakatane Increases Slightly

Compared with the same period last year the amount of power consumed at Whakatane this year is up considerably. Because of this the Whakatane Borough Council is seriously considering severe cuts, unrless consumption is brought down. Up to March 6 consumption in the borough was rising rapidly and concern was felt that power to the town might be cut off. Circulars were distributed to users and although there was no change the first week (was, in fact, a rise of over 4 per cent) it did drop over the following period. The week after that there were two very cold days and the figure rose again, but the following week, which was last week, the consumption dropped sharply due to the breakdown last Wednesday. Warnings were given yesterday that electricity had to be conserved. Every week progress figures on the Voluntary rationing, scheme, at present in operation, will be published. Following are figures, compared with the same period last year:— Week Increased Aggregate ending % increase since 1/1/49
