Railways Seeking Extra Road Services
Opposed strongly by the Opotiki ‘Carriers’ Association an application by the Minister of Railways for five additional vehicle authorities for the continuous goods-service license ■on the / Taneatua-Whakatane-Gis-borne routes was considered by the No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority, Mr E. J. Phelan, at Whakatane on Tuesday. Decision was reserved. Mr W. Andrew appeared for the railways and Mr W. T. Hanna, officer in charge for the Railway Road 'Services in the . Rotorua district, -outlining the Department’s reasons for wanting to extend the license. Opposing the application for the Opotiki Carriers Mr N. Hodgson ■said that if it were successful it would be detrimental to the business of the local carriers.
Mr Hanna remarked that all the Road Services wanted was to deliver to Opotiki from Taneatua. No stops would be made in between, and goods for in between places would be taken to Opotiki and then brought back by local carriers. Reserving judgment, Mr Phelan it seemed rather farcical to take goods right through to Opotiki and then bring them back, to be delivered at in between destinations. He -promised to have the matter reviewed.
