AWAKERI’S WAR MEMORIAL PLANS WELL ADVANCED

• Awakeri’s plans for a war ' memorial community centre are .going- well, and the first major effort to raise funds is to he the 1 gymkhana next week. Meani while, considerable improvei ments have already been made s to the hall, which is to be the nucleus of the centre. • At the original meeting when the community centre scheme was adopted, it was decided that something had to he done immediately about renewing the floor and maintaining the present'building in reasonable repair. The new Hall Committee engaged a tradesman to re-glaze the windows and paint the frames and exterior woodwork and, by organising .-several working bees, has succeeded in brightening up the premises -considerably. There still remains the major job of renewing the floor. 'The committee, by running a series : of dances, coupled with ordinary revenue and credits in hand, has •sufficient Junds to complete this -work, a contract for which has been let for £217. Preliminary plans for the proposed new centre have been prepared, an offer over additional land is offered, and the campaign for funds, which will carry a £1 for £1 Government subsidy, is under way. Ultimately it is planned that the main building will cater for dancing on a floor approximately 70 feet by 50 feet, capable also of accommodating three Badminton courts. There is also to be a meeting roomlibrary, Scout hall and Plunket room. The committee has an option over enough extra land to provide three tennis courts, a croquet green and a bowling green. A series of dances which commenced last- October provided some •of the money needed, but the fund is still far short of the target.
