Diseased Dairy Cows Being Treated With Penicillin
Penicillin is being flown from Britain to New Zealand for use in large-scale experiments designed to increase the milk yield of cattle. The experiment, which is being conducted by the New Zealand Dairy Board and the Department .of Agriculture, seeks to eliminate a cattle disease which, it. is estimated, causes a loss in milk production equivalent ; to £1,000,000 a year. Penicillin production is making good progress in the United Kingdom. The penicillin factory recently opened at Ulverston, North Lancashire, will ultimately employ 500 workers when the full scheme prepared by Glaxo Laboratories is in operation. The new plant, which started production recently, includes two fermentation units, and the whole scheme will cost about £700,000.
