GUIDE LEADERS BADLY NEEDED IN DISTRICT

Guiding in this district is hampered by lack of young, keen leaders. The district Commissioner, Mrs T. G. Santon, was in the Beacon office yesterday discussing the problem.

In this district at present, it seems we have one Captain and one temporary Brown Owl. We need at least one Lieutenant to help the Captain with the Guides, a Brown Owl to take charge of the Brownies and a Tawny Owl to aid the Brown Owl.

Mrs Santon made it clear we needn’t think there had to be anything owlish about these Owls. Nor was she ‘Owling (sorry, we couldn’t resist that) about a lack of social consciousness or anything like that. She just wanted us to let the public know that there is an intensely interesting and constructive job waiting for any public-spirited young women who are keen on the outdoors and want to help young girls to be better citizens. Here is what it takes:— 1. The ability to play in the fullest sense of .the word.

2. The ability to take things seriously, yet keep them in their proper perspective. 3. An unlimited amount of energy, spiritual, physical and mental.

4. A willingness to work. 5. Dependability. 6. The ability to realise that children are individuals and to study and observe (heir reaction to one another.

7. An inexhaustible sense of humour.

8. An unwavering sense of responsibility. 9. An imaginative sympathy, which is rightfully called tact. 10. Finally, she should be a worthy example of all she upholds. This looks like a mighty and forbidding list, but should not our aim always outreach our grasp? And, as in the Guide Promise “. . . to do our best . . .” is what is required.

Any young women interested in the proposition should ring Mrs Santon at Taneatua or Miss Righton, Whakatane.
