N.Z. Athletes May Fly To The 1956 Olympic Games
“New Zealand’s chance will come in 1956, if the Olympic Games are held in Melbourne—we shall certainly shoot them across by air then,” said the chairman (Mr A. D. Bayfield) at a meeting of the New Zealand Olympic and Empire Games Association.
After a suggestion by Mr L. A. Tracy (boxing) that athletes did not perform well after air travel, Mr H. I. Austad (athletics) said the question had been , discussed with La Beach and McKenley and they were firmly convinced that air travel was the only way. “They considered our method of selecting an Olympic team a year before the games, was crazy,” said Mr Austad. “They thought that to send a team five weeks in a ship was wrong. The Americans selected their team two weeks before the games and then shot them across while they were at the peak of their form. Their performances had belied any suggestion that the air travel had affected them.”
