POST OFFICE FOR WHAKATANE STILL ON PAPER

What of Whakatane’s new post office?

Many people would like to know what progress is being made with it since the announcement was first made that the town was in line for an office. Mr W. Sullivan M.P. was curious, too, and in a letter from the Minister of Works, Mr Semple, he found that the building was only in the stage of sketch plans. “The position is that revised sketch plans, embodying amendments requested by the Post and Telegraph Department, have recently been sent to that Department for approval,” the Minister states, in his letter. “As soon as advice is received that the plans are approved and that financial authority and the consent of the Building Controller have been obtained, working drawings will be put in hand. “It is anticipated that the necessary approvals will not be long delayed. “Working drawings, however, as you will appreciate, will take some time, at least six months, and, of course, tenders cannot be invited until these are completed,” Mr Semple concludes. Very little could be done about it at the present time, Mr Sullivan told the Beacon, when he received the advice from the Minister. It appeared that it would be some time yet before anything was done.
