Maoris May Enter Miss N.Z. Quest
Maori blood is no disqualification from participation in the “Miss New Zealand” quest. This has been made clear by the executive director, Mr K. W. Kilpatrick, who said some people had apparently misunderstood the requirement that girls competing in the quest must be “of British parentage, born in New Zealand.”
As in the last quest, it had never been intended to exclude Maori girls, and the Board of Directors of the quest was glad to give the assurance that in its opinion Maoris were “of British parentage.” Mr Kilpatrick said that this point had been mentioned by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, who, on having the position explained to him, had replied that he was glad to know there whs no such disqualification.
The Prime Minister had taken a keen interest in the first Miss New Zealand quest, Mr Kilpatrick said, and had expressed his best wishes for the success of the present one.
