WHAKATANE IS GETTING ARROW CONSCIOUS NOW
(By “Left Hand Corner”) J There are arrows in the air. 40 I say that to make it clear in thisfl farming community that I to talk about archery, not cultiva-,.--tion. Nor do I drop my haspirates (pardon, grandma’s mother-in-law came from that part of Hengland). Getting back to these arrows. Someone dropped in here the other day and reminded us we had agitated successfully for an athletic club, then for a pony club, so why not put out a feeler about an archery club? We did, and it clicked. You’d be surprised the number of women who seem interested. My guess is they’d sooner do their own dirty work than leave it all to Cupid. After all, he’s blind-folded, and to let him skewer just anything for you might lead to all sorts- of complications. + Mr Chapman suggests that all these keen would-be archers ought to go along to the Robin Hood show at his theatre. After all, he points out, Robin was top class in his day and might still be able to give ,the moderns a hint or two, even if he is only Errol Flynn dressed up. Where lies the undoubted fascination in archery? Could it be the happy memories it brings back of boyhood days with the old “bonearrer”? Sure it is that in one’s prefirearm childhood the primitive weapon represented the height of adventurous ambition. '
Anyway, whatever the cause, there is evidence of plenty of interest in archery here. And when one of the enthusiasts asked us if we would put out a feeler, in view of past successes, what could we do but smile our sweetset smile and leap blithely into the task. But I, for one, shall refuse to budge if any crackpot comes in here wanting to start a nudist club.
