Bay Of Plenty Wins , Reid Cup Match

The representative tennis match between Bay of Plenty and Poverty Bay-East Coast was played on Sunday on the Opotiki courts, Bay of Plenty retaining the Reid Cup by the narrow margin of one set. Play, which commenced on Saturday afternoon, had to be abandoned because of rain. Games continued on slow, wet courts the following morning.

Of the Whakatane players, Miss M. Hall was. the only one to score a singles win, her play improving considerably from her performance in the mixed doubles. R. Lees appeared to lack confidence, consequently hitting the ball too short

and -too slowly. This suited his formidable opponent, Richardson, who hit the corners with fast drives and attacked with great success at the net.

E. Wilson did not appear to find I the slow going to his liking, and ! seemed unable to produce his sizzling corner drives which he usually employs to good effect. P. Bryers went down to a young, fit opponent who did not appear to have any marked weakness, The highlight of the contest was the top men’s doubles in which R. Lees played superb tennis, making .lew errors and repeatedly turning defence into attack. dis winners with lob volleys were a delight to witness, and his general all-round ! play brought much applause from the spectators. Bryers, too played an inspired game his heavily-spun service and sharply-angled smashes and volleys playing a major part , in finishing off rallies. ■ Richardson on the other side of ' the net hit the ball extremely hard | when opportunity arose but he and Stubbings lost the match on their reluctance to get in to the net, thus losing the initiative. Wilson and Guinness (Tauranga) combined very well to secure a comfortable win, Wilson being particularly severe overhead. . v. j' Miss Hall and Miss Brown (Tauranga) after an easy win in the first set, lost control, mainly ■ through an unaccountable lapse in | Miss Brown’s usually steady game.
