CLUB SINGLES CHAMPION-** SHIP COMMENCED

Three rounds in the Whakatane Bowling Club’s, singles championship were played on Saturday. Conditions for play were not ideal, the greens being heavy from the recent rains, and the fourth round had to be postponed until next Saturday owing to heavy rain in the late afternoon. Bowlers successful during the day were:— ■ Two Lifers:! L. Berg, T. Duley, D. Anderson, C. 'W. Good. One Lifers: J. Copestake, C. Head, R. Stewart, J. Thompson, A. CKing, E. Johnson, P. Smoljan, W. Howat Jnr., A. Carling, W. Compton, L. Littlejohn, S. J. McKenzie. Picnic Tournament A Picnic Tournament with teams from Matata, Oh ope, Taneatua, Opotiki and Whakatane was held over' the week-end. An enjoyable day was spent, although the heavy rain, on Saturday evening had made thfr greens very heavy. Winners were:— A Section (won outright with., seven wins) Whakatane, P. Campbell, A. Rutherford, W. Munro, J... Copestake (s). B Section (six wins) Taneatua* J. Gardiner, A. Burt, T. Wilson, THunt (s). A very close and well played finaleresulted in a win for Hunt’s team, the score being 5—4. Palmer Memorial Trophy The first annual tournament for the Thomas Palmer Memorial Trophy was held at Te Puke on Saturday. Teams from all over the Bay of Plenty took part, Whakatane being represented by two teams, skipped by W. Howat and A. MeIsaac. . ■

This tournament was. won by a Taurapga team skipped by C. Potter whose team did so well in the recent Rotorua annual tournament and also fared well in the New Zealand Championships.
