Waikato Wins Hawke Cup Cricket Match: Innings & 49 Runs

(Special to Beacon) Rotorua, Monday. Waikato won by an innings and 49 runs in the Hawke Cup cricket match against Bay of Plenty at the Kuirau Reserve, Rptorua, at mid-day. The strong batting was largely responsible for such a decisive win, together with the fact that the Bay team was weakened by the absence of W. Higgins, D. Wyatt and L. R. Spring. The pitch was much more lively this morning than on the first two days and spin bowlers, getting much more assistance from the wicket, had the game in the bag from the outset.

W. Beattie, 52, Bay’s highest scorer in the second innings, who was uncomfortable and did not settle down this morning, went out to an off break from H. Winger. Details: — Waikato: First innings 414. Bay of Plenty: First innings 193. Second innings: H. Martin, st Petrie b McMahon 30; N. Beattie, b Winger 52; M. Le Pine, c Elrick, b McMahon 5; T/ Tregonning, hit wkt, b McMahon 0; W. TE PUKE KEEPS WILLIAMS CUP P. and T.’s challenge for the Williams Cup last week-end failed miserably. Playing confidently on their home wicket, the Te, Puke eleven stacked up 168, then skittled the Whakatane boys for 34, Reid doing most of the damage with bowling that left the visitors hazed. Settling to their'work better when they followed on, P. and T. made 107, losing the match by an innings and 27 runs.
