Whakatane High School Swimmers Compete At Te Puke

A strong team of swimmers travelled from the Whakatane District High School last week to attend the S--. Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools’ f annual swimming carnival at Te Puke. Competing in most of the events the Whakatane representatives gained several successful placings. Schools from Opotiki to Waihi took part.

Also in attendance at the carnival were the New Zealand Champion Women swimmers, who are at present touring the country, Misses Ngaire Lane, Hazel Forsyth and Betty Casey. They gave exhibitions of different strokes and later gave instruction.

New records were established by three Whakatane swimmers, R. Gillard in the intermediate bay’s 25 yards breaststroke, B. Cave, in the junior boy’s 25 yards, and A. Pryor in the senior boy’s'2s yards. Among the boys B. Cave was the most successful Whakatane competitor, gaining two firsts and a second.
