MR NASH WAS IMPRESSED WITH WHAKATANE MILL

“This is the type of industry we want. One where we can use our own raw materials as much as possible and turn them into a useful commodity.” So said the Minister of Finance, Mr Walter Nash, to a Beacon reporter during a short visit to the Whakatane Board Mills on Monday. Mr Nash said he thought the mill should be as independant as possible. He would like to see it develop to a size where it could supply the home market and also be able to export. At present it was manufacturing for a New Zealand market only, and not able to satisfy that. *

There large forest areas not far distant from Whakatane which could be tapped to supply the mill with raw material, Mr Nash added. All this could be used in expanding the industry, and that should be encouraged. Mr Nash said he was very impressed with the mill. He thought it should be encouraged in its operations as he considered the industry had a big future in New Zealand. .

“I Hope So”

What are the chances of a paper pulp mill being built at Murupara? Is it likely that one will be established when the new scheme for tapping the forest is brought into operation? Mr Nash was asked during his visit to the Whakatane Board Mills on Monday. His reply told little more than was known before. “I hope so, I hope so,” he murmured.
