VINEGAR IN SHORT SUPPLY: POSITION IS IMPROVING

Although supplies of vinegar have been desperately short at Whakatane, and indeed in most other centres throughout the country, grocers yesterday said they expected the position to improve from this week. By next week they thought that most of the demand will be able to be met.

Various grocers had different opinions for the cause of the shortage. One said he did not know but hoped to be able to satisfy his customers by Friday as he had an order that was, expected on Monday. Another gave his opinion that the manufacturers were desperately short of kegs and bottles and had been unable to send out adequate supplies. However, the position now looked brighter and most orders were expected to be fulfilled within the next few weeks. Sugar Still Short

Another commodity that is still scarce and which is causing both housewives and grocers a certain amount of worry is sugar. While supplies are coming to hand slowly retailers have been finding it very difficult to satisfy the demand. They have had to ration customers, but in most cases there is not even enough for a reasonable ration. Grocers are hopeful of an improvement within the next few weeks.
