Earthquake At Whakatane May Be From White Island

A short earthquake was felt at Whakatane on Monday at about 6.25 a.m. It came in three distinct shakes, the first being the most violent. The movement appeared to be from North to South but none of the shakes was strong enough to do any damage. '■

A resident living right on the banks of the Whakatane River said that on Sunday night sulphur could be smelt quite clearly and seemed to be coming up river from the mouth. It is thought that it may have been coming from White Island which, in the last few days, has been very active. If this is the case it may be that Monday’s earthquake was caused by White. Island’s activity.
