POHATUROA ROCK TO BE A STOP ONLY FOR BUSES

That buses should use Quay Street at Whakatane for a parking place to relieve the traffic congestion around Pohaturoa Rock, was recommended in a report from the Transport Department’s traffic inspector, the late Mr J. Kehoe, which was received and adopted by the Whakatane Borough Council on Monday night. In his report the traffic inspector stated that the proposed scheme would alleviate the congestion caused by buses parking for an indefinite period by the Rock. He had three suggestions to make. (a) That all buses use the Rock only as a stop. After they had set down their passengers they move to a suitable area in Quay street on the river side. Here, they would wait until the return trip, stopping at the Rock before proceeding. (b) That the existing stop at the Rock be cut dowln so as to give clearance to the convenience.

(c) That all buses on the Ohope route use the proposed stop for loading and unloading and that no buses be allowed to double up, thus blocking the road as is done on Friday evenings. The council received the report favourably. The mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, thought it was a sound scheme that would clear the area. The question of adequate lighting in Quay Street was raised by Cr R. S. Buttimore, who said that one bus owner had not liked parking in the street because of the possibility of stealing from the bus. He had recently lost a tennis racquet from a bus there. People might not like leaving parcels in the bus in a darkened street. When this was referred to the borough electrical engineer, Mr F. Lysaght, he said, that one new light had been installed, and another was to be put in as soon as fittings came to hand. When this was completed there would 'be enough lighting. After further discussion the council decided to adopt the recommendations set out in the report.
