TWO MEN CHARGED WITH STEALING A TENNIS RACQUET
Charged with the theft of a tennis racquet valued at £5/15/-, the property of Roland McDonald, Rangitaiki, two young men Wiri Kingi, labourer, Piripai, and Bennie Mokai, labourer, Poroporo, appeared before Messrs L. H. Brown and H. G. Warren, J’s. P., in the Whakatane Police Court on Friday. Kingi was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment, cumulative on those he has from other charges, and Mokai was remanded to appear at Whakatane on December 17. Both accused pleaded guilty. Constable R. F. Julian said that on November. 13 McDonald parked his car in the Strand, and while he was attending the pictures Mokai stole the racquet from the back seat. He took it away and planted it but was seen by Kingi. Kingi then stole the racquet and hid it, returning later and attempting, to sell it.
