St JOHN CADETS’ EVENING

CERTIFICATES PRESENTED First aid, hygiene and proficiency certificates earned by St John Ambulance Brigade cadets were presented by Messrs A. J. Canning and A. Carling at a party tea and social evening for the cadets and cadet nurses on Monday evening. A party of children from the hospital, two of ! them stretcher cases, were brought by the Ambulance as also was Wendy Newth, a nursing cadet at present incapacitated at home. Everyone enjoyed the evening thoroughly. Organisation was in the hands of Miss -F. Fife, in charge of cadet nurses at Whakatane, jVlrs Wylde, who brought 'her team of cadets from Waimapa, and Cadet Supt. W. Abbott. Following the tea, cadets presented a concert programme, beginning with a lively turn by Colin Ranby’s team of amateur gymnasts. Followed Shirley Brabant and Ruth Wheeler, piano duet; Margaret Mahy, recitation; Marie Guptil and Fiona Wilson, songs; Janice and Roger Bell, violin and piano; Highland dancing items and the Waimana girls’ choir (Pipers D. Pattison and Ferguson gave the authentic background for the Highland items); Margaret Smith, S. Hannah, Dulcie Dalton, Ruth Wheeler, quartet, assisted by Yvonne Kenyon. Santa Claus showed up during the evening and, to the accompaniment of gay and well-informed banter, produced presents for all the young people. When the hospital group had to go home, the ambulance backed right in, and the rest of the party gathered round and sang “Now is the Hour” in farewell. Proficiency certificates: Eric Dockray, handcrafts; Alan Taylor, cooking; Bruce Taylor, camping.
