Man Bitten By Unregistered Dog

On behalf of Rex William Bartlett, who did not appear, Mr G. Otley entered pleas of guilty on charge of keeping an unregistered dog and of being the owner of a Great Dane dog that had attacked and injured George Lawson on October 27. Constable Julian told the Court that Bartlett’s dog had attacked Lawson in the street and had bitten him several times, causing wounds that had been treated by a doctor. The Constable said he knew the, dog quite well and had never considered it vicious. Mr Otley said the dog had never previously showed any tendency to hurt anyone, and suggested there must be a special explanation in this case. The Magistrate said conviction would mean an order for the destruction of the dog unless it could be shown there were special circumstances, and to give Mr Otley a chance to make further submissions he would adjourn the case for sentence until February. Meanwhile measures must be taken to control the dog. Penalty for non-registra-tion would be a 10/- fine and 10/costs.
