Strange Lapses: Examination Ordered
Constable . Julian recommended that Cecil, D. Dennehy, whom he described as a “dull-witted youth”, should be examined by a nerve specialist. Dennehy had pleaded guilty to assaulting a young woman by pulling her off her bicycle on the Awakeri road near Edgecumbe on November 17, and claimed he had no recollection of doing it. The Constable said he knew of other instances of these strange lapses of memory bn Dennehy’s part and considered for his own sake he should be examined. On this occasion the girl had been riding alone at night when her assailant had stepped out into the road, pulled her off the machine and clapped his hand over her mouth when she screamed. The second time she screamed he let her go and ran off. Dennehy was convicted, ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within three months, a term of the suspension being that he should be examined by a doctor approved by the police.
