Mutton Birds—4/-: Lawful Price, 2/5

Peter Cc-utts, prosecuted by Mr G. Otley representing the Director of Price Control, pleaded guilty to two, charges in connection with the sale of mutton birds at 4/- each when the maximum authorised price was 2/5. First charge was that he failed to display a ticket stating the retail price, and the second that he sold the birds at 4/- each. He was fined £l, costs £2/12/- on each charge, with mileage 2/- on the first.

Mr Otley said it appeared Coutts had bought from a wholesaler above the authorised retail price, and was .making 1/1, compared with an allowable profit of 3d.

Mr Barry, for the defendant, explained that no mutton birds had been obtainable from Bluff when his client, anxious to please certain customers, had tried to get them, because the Maoris down there would not sell at Price Tribunal prices. When he ultimately got some from Invercargill, he claimed they cost him over 3/-.
