Oyster Immigrants
In order to replenish and enlarge the supply of oysters in British Waters, about eleven million sesd oysters are to be imported this year from France, Portugal and other European countries. One oyster can/produce about 16 million eggs at one time. The eggs hatch out into, freely swimming creatures each about 150th of an inch long. After a time these sink to the bottom and fasten’ themselves on stones and other objects as minute oysters about one twentieth of an inch in diameter. French cultivators sometimes place crates of tiles, covered with lime, to attract the tiny , oysters who wish to settle down in life.
