Matata Women’s Institute
The Matata Women’s Institute celebrated its 19th birthday last Wednesday in the King’s Theatre. Mrs H. Withy presided, and welcomed members and visitors, and Mrs Caverhill read the minutes of the first Institute meeting held on October 11, 1929, and it was found that eight of' the foundation members were still regular in attendance. ' Mrs War brick and Mrs. Wilson were presented with birthday sprays. As it was International Day, each member was, asked to pay Id for the A.C-WW., and on exhibition were quite a collection Of articles from Japan. Miss Mitai gave a very pleasing dance item. There were several competitions, these being wop by Mrs Henry, Mrs Jamieson and Mrs J. Parkinson. < A box of sweets was won by Miss M. Conn. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, after which the birthday cake, made ; hy Mrs J. Parkinson, was cut .by Mrs H. Carter, of Edgecumbe, and candles were blown out by Matata foundation members. Competitions, judged by the visitors resulted:— , Jazz bowl of flowers: Mrs Caverhill 1, Mrs Smith 2. Best flower: Mrs Marr 1, Mrs J. Parkinson 2. Best vegetable: Mrs fParkinson 1, Mrs Conn 2. Queen cakes: Mrs Conn 1, Mrs Dredge 2. ; - , Handkerchief: Mrs H. Withy., A very pleasant afternoon was brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem.
