Sporting Spirit Of Rugby Players Stressed At Dinner
The fine sporting spirit of football players and the value of Rugby to New Zealand as a sport was stressed by Mr C. S. Armstrong, at the annual dinner of the United Football Club, held at the Captain’s Cabin, Ohope, on Saturday night. He congratulated the Bay of Plenty representative and All Black trialist, Mr B. McGougan, on his fine showing during the trials. About 180 guests attended the dinner, which was later followed by a dance, the music being provided by Freddie Burt’s orchestra. The president, Mr R. S. Buttimore, welcomed all guests and thanked the various speakers for their complimentary remarks about the United Club. He referred to an unfortunate accident suffered by one of the junior players, Bruce Mundy, who has been in the hospital for about two months. His suggestion that a dinner, complete with the usual refreshment, be sent to this player at the hospital was unanimously supported, and the dinner duly despatched. During the dance a competition for a very coveted prize was won by Mr B. S. Barry- This was shared with quite a number of those present. The toast list was:— The King, United Football Club, proposed by Mr C. S. Armstrong—reply Mr R. S. Buttimore; The Bay of Plenty Rugby Union, Mr J. Rolfe —Mr P. Bryers; St John Ambulance, Mr S. Shapley—Mr A. Carling; Referees, Mr G. Gordon—Mr H. Mahy.
