ANNUAL ST JOHN APPEAL FOR FUNDS MERITS SUPPORT
Friday is the annual St John Ambulance Association appeal day at Whakatane. It does no harm at this stage briefly to outline the work that is being done in our community by this splendidly public-.spirit-ed and-humanitarian organisation. During the past few years public generosity has enabled the Association to increase its services considerably, so that now, apart from providing the district’s only ambulance service, St John workers are providing much-needed assitance at the District Hospital, patrolling all sports and other public gatherings to give first-aid where needed, and training more and more Ambulance Brigade Cadets and Cadet Nurses to provide a constant flow of reinforcements for the senior services. All these services, it cannot be emphasised too strongly, are entirely voluntary. However, it will be realised that there are running costs to be met, and on Friday the public at large will be given the chance to co-operate with the St John workers in their humanitarian work by providing the necesary funds. There is no need to remind citizens of this town that they themselves might be next to need the Ambulance Brigade’s help. Past years have shown such a record of generous response that any appeal to an even vaguely selfish motive would seem a little gauche. . Better far merely to remind those who have overlooked the worthiness of this appeal in the past that they now have a chance to remedy that oversight, and those who have been generous before that their help has contributed materially to a worthwhile service which appreciates their continued support. The St John organisation stands ready to translate public generosity into practical aid for suffering humanity.
