RED CROSS IN N.Z.

Quarterly Executive Meeting

Back from the quarterly meeting of the New Zealand Red. Cross Executive at Wellington last week, Mrs A. W. Winstone, Whakatane, gave the Beacon a few comments on the proceedings. During a morning tea at which the Governor-General and Lady Freyberg were present, they told Mrs Winstone they had enjoyed their recent visit here very much indeed. They said everyone had been “very kind.”

Sir Bernard received his Red Cross badge, as Patron of the N.Z. Red Cross Society at the hands of Mr A. E. Gibbons, Dominion chairman. His Excellency thanked the Society for the. badge,’which he said he would be proud to wear. He added he would never forget its work for “the boys,” and he was pleased to see the Society’s interest in the new Veterans’ Home at Berhampore, where he had seen sewing done by Red Cross women workers. Sir Bernard remarked he was still wearing a pair of Red Cross slippers given to him when he was in hospital in the Middle East. They were so comfortable he “omitted” to return them. Lady Tymms, who was twice decorated for work with the British Red Cross in India, Lady Duff, wife of the British Commissioner, and President of the Junior Red Cross, Miss Violet Russell, Assistant N.Z.R.C. Commissioner in England (who has personally supervised distribution of food and clothing parcels from N.Z.R.C. in Britain since the beginning of the war) and Dr. Bossard, representative in New Zealand of the International Red‘Cross, were also present and welcomed by Mr Gibbons.
