Suggestion To Pack Manure In Small Bags

A suggestion that fertiliser packed in 12 jute bags to the ton was too hard to handle and that it should be packed in 24 paper bags to the -ton, was made at a meeting of the executive of the Bay of Plenty Province of Federated Farmers, held recently at Matata. The view that there should be a compromise between the two sizes was expressed by. Mr I. B. Gow, Rangitaiki, who suggested that the 16 to 18 bag size would be more convenient to handle, and would not involve much more expense as regards freight. „ Mr S. A. Wells. Katikati, said that fertiliser packed in 12 bags to the ton was quite easy to handle, and was preferred by carriers. Those who wanted superphosphate packed in smaller bags could pay. extra for it.

The president, Mr A. L. Friis, explained that, for the average farmer, facilities tor handling manure were limited. Sixteen bags to the ton would be the most acceptable. ‘‘We are up against costs all the time. Farmers who want it packed in 16 to the ton bags should pay for it,” said Mr E. B. Carey, Te Puke. “If we start interfering, we will be threatened with rising costs.” It was finally left to the secretary, Mr E. J. Vosper, to investigate the position. He found after making inquiries that 16 to the ton bags cannot be obtained. There is also an acute shortage of jute bags at prer sent with the position not likely to change for some time.
