Address In Darkness When the lights failed in the hall in which he was addressing an audience of farmers at Whakatane on Monday night, Dr. W. E. Petersen, Professor of Dairy Husbandry in the U.S.A., decided to keep talking. The failure lasted for" about fivq minutes but during it Dr: Petersen continued his address in utter darkness. Taneatua Plunket Effort The Taneatua Sub-branch of the Plunket Society held' a committee meeting in the library recently. The chief business was the discussion referring to the raising of £35, the Taneatua quota for.the purchase of a new car for the plunket nurse. Mr A. F. McGo'ugan, County Councillor, was present and gave his much, appreciated advice. It was finally decided to hold a geonral canvass during the third week November. Wandering 1 Horses \ Prosecuted by the County Poundkeeper, Mr A. Carling, before Mr ' E. L. Walton, S.M., at Whakatane yesterday for allowing horses to wander on County roads, the following offenders were convicted and fined: W. Kingi, 30s costs £1 13s 6d; P. Purewa, £l, costs £1 13s-6d; W. H. Hughes 30s, costs £l, 0s 6d; P. Raimona 30s, cost* £1 9s 6d; T. Salmon 30, costs £1 19s 6d; M. Hune £l, costs £1 19s 6d; K. Tihi £l, costs £1 19s 6d. f Guy Fawkes At Ohope Tomorrow Mr S. Petersen's two trucks will be making a collection from all Ohope homes of all rubbish that will burn. The collection has a two-fold purpose. Not only will it help people to get rid of a lot of unwanted litter, but it will provide • the bonfire which is to be the main attraction in the children's Gay Fawkes celebrations which Mr Petersen has volunteered to organise y with the blessing and assistance of the Progress League. Wet October October was a wet month in this district, 6.87 inches of rain having/ fallen compared with an average for October over the previous ten years of 4.66. There were 21 wet d?ys, the greatest number in any nunth. since 1935, with the heaviest fall .95 inches, on October. 7. Rainfall for the ten months just past is 64.19 inches, compared with an average iof 49.56 fpr. similar portions of the previous ten years. \ Cows Are Feminine "I Enow there are many problem cows and often one wonders what > to do with them," said Dr. W. E. Petersen,, in an address at Whakatane on Monday night.- "Often we can't'' even seem to understand them. Really, I don't think we shall ever understand cows completely, and the reason we shall never understand them is because they are feminine," he added, amid roars of laughter, both from the men and wo- i men present.
