New Zealanders Record Meat-Eaters And Milk Drinkers
Now that meat rationing has . ceased, the people of New Zealand might set an even higher world rei cord for meat-eating than that which they have already established. In spite of the decline in dairyproduction in New Zealand, the people of the Dominion also hold the world record for milk-drinking. Before the recent wax’, and again last yeax-, more meat was eaten and, more milk drunk on a population basis in New Zealand than in any other country in the woi’ld. -These facts are revealed by figures issued by the International Emergency Food Council. Last year, the average New Zealander drank 53.8 gallons of liquid milk—more than a gallon a week—and, in spite of rationing, ate 2621 b of meat —-more than 51b a week. Before the war, the figures were even higher—s7.s gallons of milk and 2701 b of meat. Comparative figures are:—1947 • Pre-war Gallons Gallons
In meat consumption, New Zealand leads the next highest consumer, Argentine, by 271 b a head. Comparative meat consumption figures per caput during 1947 and pre-war are:—
