NEW MURUPARA
Town Larger Than Wiiakatane? When pulp mills are erected at Murupara a town larger than Whakatane will be established, it was stated at the monthly meeting of the Whakatane County Council yesterday. It will have from the beginning a population of from four to 5000 rising in time to about 10,000.
The mills will be under the control of the Forestry Department, which is expected to establish them within the next few years. Preliminary investigations have already been undertaken by the Department in conjunction with the Lands and Survey Department. One problem that had to be overcome was the placing of the proposed town in a position where it would not be bothered by the offensive odours from the mills, said the chairman of the Council’s Finance and General Purposes Committee, Mr L. W. Luxton. A large amount of waste products would be left, from the running of the mills and these gave off particularly unpleasant smells. After some discussion Mr Luxton said that at present no action was being taken to establish the proposed settlement immediately.
