W.L Shop Windows Attract Attention At Friday’s Show

The shop window competition held at the Home Industries Show was an outstanding feature, and. proved of intense interest to the public. There were eight “Shops” which took up the length of the right wall of the Winter Show Buildinp. The judges had a difficult task, but in their final summing up, honours went to the “Delicatessen” shop window, staged by Otakiri W.L

One only needed a glance to realise the amount of last-minute preparation of such an attractive display of appetising foodstuffs. Second points were divided between Whakatane W.I. “Gift Shop” and the “Cake Shop” arranged by Thornton WI. Edgecumbe, whose choice also was a “Gift Shop” gained third place. The organiser has expressed regret that, through an oversight, the second ticket was wrongly made out and placed on Edgecumbe window instead of Whakatane.

Judges remarked on the outstanding workmanship of the needlework exhibited in this class, work worthy of a place in shows anywhere in New Zealand. Their comments follow:

No. 1 Gift Shop Edgecumbe W.I. 36 points. Window well arranged, but floor rug rather dominated other floor articles. Needed a little more balance. Workmanship outstanding. No. 2 Florist Shop, Manawahe W.I. 35 points. Flowers rather poorly arranged, in some instances bouquet combination of colours (and ribbon) not artistic. Some features, such as plants and moss, very good. No. 3 Delicatessen, Otakiri W.I. 40 points. Nearly perfect, but received first marks because its value as -a “Shop Window” left nothing to be desired.

No.' 4 Gift Shop, Whakatane W.I. 39 points. Many good and original articles. Rather a drawback to commercial value, having no prices. No. 5 Cake Shop, Thornton W.I. 39 points. The passer-by would be attracted by class of food to be served and china—as a commercial value it is outstanding.

No. 6 Gift Shop, Matata W.I. 33 points. Rather less artistically arranged. Rather flat, and could be more balanced. Good workmanship. No. 7 Lingerie, Waimana W.I. 30 points. Very attractive but not enough variety to be of commercial value.

No. 8 Gift Shop, Kowhai W.I. 33 points. Not artistically arranged, though work outstandingly well done. Not much variety, mostly needlework."
