Floods Showed Value Of Red Cross
“What has happened with such dramatic suddenness and disastrous consequence must surely indicate the importance of consolidating and building up our Red Cross organisation in all districts, particularly those which are subject to flood and seasonal disaster,” said the Secre-tary-General of Red Cross for New Zealand, Mr M. S. Galloway, in an initial letter to the Gisborne secretary, Mr W. Oakden, regarding the recent serious floods in Gisborne. A cheque for £2OO was enclosed, this sum having been voted by the Standing Committee in support of meeting the immediate needs of those who suffered by the disaster. Mr Galloway offered the fullest co-operation with whatever steps the Gisborne Committee decided to take with a view to consolidating their organisation and work, so that there should be no danger of delay in helping sufferers in any other unexpected visitations. Both Mr Oakden and the Mayor of Gisborne, Mr N. H. Bull, gratefully acknowledged the grant.
