Should Hospitals Have First Call On Young Doctors?
A resolution that no doctor should be allowed to engage in private practice before serving at least two ' years, following 'graduation, in a public hospital, and asking that representations be made to the Minister of Health to amend the Statutes 7 or regulations to bring this about, was forwarded recently’to the Hospital Boards Association from the Waikato Hospital Board. In reply, the association said the matter was somewhat outside its scope and it suggested that the board approach the British Medical Association. The mover of the original resolution, Mr E. G. Guy, stated when this reply was read at last week’s meeting of the Waikato Hospital Board that while he did not object to the resolution being referred to the B.M.A. as a matter of courtesy, he did hot regard it a 4 a legislative body. If the matter did not come within the scope of the Hospital Board’s Association, it was necessary that its powers be extended. He moved that the resolution be sent direct to the Minister of Health and that it be circulated to other hospital boards. The chairman, Mr H. D. Caro, observed that the association was trying to “pass the buck.” He supported Mr Guy’s suggestion. . Mrs H. Ross, M.P., said the matter was of first class importance and she would bring it up in the House when the social security estimates were discussed.
