VITAL VITAMINS: HOW AND WHERE TO FIND THEM
* Though they can be considered separately, vitamins work as a team—all are npeded in close association to promote health, .growth and vigour. Vitamin A: This vitamin does two things in the body. Firstly, it maintains in proper healthy condition, such tissues as the front of the eye (cornea), moist surfaces such jas in the nose and mouth, and the condition of the skin. Secondly, Vitamin A maintains the power of the eyes to adapt themselves quickly to a dim light. Found in: Liver, Eggs, Butter, Milk, Cheese, Carrots, Tomatoes, Dark Greens, Vegetables, Spinach, Watercress, Turnip-tops, Mackerel, Herrings, Lettuce, Cabbage, Green Peas, Dried Apricots, Prunes, Vitamin B: The term Vitamin B can be used to describe a complex of a number of substances: Vitamin B, Riboflavin, Nicotinic Acid and many others which are usually (although not always) found together in the same foods but in differing proportions. They are concerned with the ignition system by which the body releases for itself the energy in such foods as flour,, sugar, whole cereals, milk, cheese, eggs andyneat which are all good sources of one or another of the B Vitamins. Found in: Wholemeal Bread, FlourLean Pork, Liver, Kidney, Eggs, Cheese, Meat, Peanuts, -Potatoes, Pea.s, Beans, Cauliflower, Meat Extract, Milk. Vitamin C: Oranges, lemons, and grapefruit are. the main sources of this Vitamin but, weight fomweight, raw brussels sprouts cut fine in a salad contain more Vitamin C than oranges.' Pure Vitamin C is called Ascorbic Afid because it prevents Scorbutus (Scurvy) a rare disease nowadays. If too little Vitamin C is available in their diet, people may feel “off colour” and may also have a bad complexion. Found in: Black Currants, Spring Greens, Sporuts, Broccoli, Spinach, Oranges, Grapefruit, Strawberries, Gooseberries,. Cabbage, Potatoes, Parsley, Lemons, Tomatoes, Pineapple, Liver, Lettuce, Swede. Vitamin D: Essential for making and maintaining strong bones and teeth, Vitamin D is usually associated with Vitamin A in animal fats. Light, through the conversion of Ergosterol, activates Vitamin D in the system. Hence the great need for daylight (not necessarily sunshine). Found in: flalibut Liver Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Herrings, Sardines, Eggs, Milk, Mackerel, Salmon, Butter, Margarine, Sunlight.
