Origin And Duties Of Notaries Public
Rotarian L. Buddie, speaker at the Whakatane Rotary Club’s gathering on Tuesday .evening, chose as his subject the origin and duties of Notaries Public. The office, he said, traced back to Roman times, when a section of the scribes were officially recognised by the State as men of integrity, and he followed the development of the notaries’ place in the scheme of things through to the present day, when they could be appointed from selected members of the legal profession or from citizens where undoubted integrity made them eligible for the office. That his audience had been keenly interested in his talk was made clear by the number of questions they asked when Rotarian Buddie invited them.
