IN ITALY TODAY

Sir, —Cleaning up some drawers I came across a letter received from a wartime friend in Italy and writI ten in September, 1946. Reading it j through again I thought that parts ; of it would be appreciated by your [ readers, so here are some extracts: “Lucia is a big and beautiful girl now; she sing every - day but it is necessary to study and to work, because my mother is old woman, my sister-in-law is very busy for home and my brother work (joust job, but is not very joust job!) everydays and every-night but without vino because in Italy one Litro of Vino one paly 100 lire! I am not married; I not work because in Italy the rebuilding is long long distance and I hope (good hope ! ! !) to work before 1980 (now 1946). Possible for me to marry now? Maybe after 1980! “I need not speak with you of the poor Italy and of the very poor Italian people; you know very well Italy and from Taranto, San Severo, Gissi, Castel Frentano, Cassino, Arrezo haVe you see big destructions and all the hungries people? Yes, you have see;, now to Parigi Molotov ask for Mr Joe Stalin 400 millions of dollars from Italian people for the poor (!?) Russian people ! ! ! ! ! Tito (compeer of Joe Stalin £ Co.) ask Trieste and 10.0 millions of dollars. This war has' been the war of freedom !!!.!!! “Italy is finisched; all ’ our old glory of the roman empire and .all the spirit of our great men of the true and great ITALY are little things .for Stalin, Attlee, Bevin, etc. We are one people who fear not bad destiny. “Italy is full politic partys and, maybe, the first party is the “fascist party” because after this war all the Italian men have had possibility to understand every-things that before of this war they have not understand “New Zealand is long long distance and I hope for see you again ...... and I consider myself very lucky if may I come there to live and I wish forget Italy, Castel Frentano and. Europe because here, after one week, all people are every days in war. Peace is noa-possible; tomorrow, maybe, Italia, lugoslavia, Francia, Grecia, Germania, etc. fight, fight, fight to the end. Why? I don’t! Yours etc., SOLDATO NEO-ZELANDESI.
