INCIDENT IN JANUARY RECALLED “Thomas Joseph Re ; ”, aged Hi years, on January I?, 1948, at the Whakatane Jtiver mouth swam 20 feet through the strong current to the rescue of a little boy who had fallen one of the deep holes and 1 .1 sunk for the second time. As soon as Reid reached him, he clutched Reid’s neck- Reid broke the grip and struggled back with him to the shore. But for the timely action, of Reid, there certainly would have been a drowning.” Above is the Royal Humane Society’s citation that accompanied the recent award of the Bronze Medallion to Tommy Reid, of Whakatane. Strange feature of this case is that the name of the rescued boy has never come to light. He is believed to have been the son of a visitor to the district. His father was present at the time, and rewarded the rescuer with a small cash gift.
