Whakatane A Wins Bay Of Plenty Primary Schools Basketball
The first Bay of Plenty Primary Schools’ Basketball Championship was held at Whakatane on Saturday in ideal weather. Nine teams competed and the standard of basketball v/as very high.. A feature of the tournament was the excellent sporting spirit displayed by the girls. The Whakatane A team won the final from Rotorua by one goal after the teams had played extra time. In the A section Whakatane A won without the loss of a game, while in the B section Rotorua and Whakatane drew vfoth three wins and a draw each. In the play-off Rotorua won and played Whakatane A in the final. Details:—
A section: Tauranga 9 Opotiki 4, Whakatane 7 Rangitaiki 4, Tauranga 3 0 Rangitaiki 8, Whakatane 9 Opotiki 4, Whakatane 9 Tauranga 5, Rangitaiki 3 Opotiki 2. B section: Whakatane 5 Rotorua 5, Rangitaiki 8 Tauranga 4, Tauranga 6 Opotiki 5, Whakatane 14, Rangitaiki 4, Rotorua 17 Tauranga 4, Rotorua 9 Rangitaiki 3, Whakatane 9 Opoiki 7, Whakatane 8 Tauranga 5, Rotorua 15 Opotiki 4. Section play-off: Rotorua 8 Whakatane 3. Final: Whakatane A 8 Rotorua 7. The catering for the day was undertaken by the Whakatane ParentTeacher Association. About 110 children and 50 adults were given morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea.
