Lyceum Club Re-Opening: Preliminary Meeting
When, early in the war, the Whakatane Lyceum Club had to give up the premises it used as a Club Room it was forced to go into recess. A small committee was formed at the final meeting • and given authority to endeavour to find other suitable premises—after the war. Recently Mrs S. C. Spence, former president, called a meeting of this committee, when it was decided to approach the Red Cross Society with the idea of renting the room originally built as a Club Room for the Registered Nurses’ Association and now vacant. The committee approved the scheme, and it was decided to call a general meeting of all those interested in the re-formation of the Lyceum Club on Friday, August 20, in the Red Cross Rooms. The Lyceum Club used to have quite a large membership, and the committee felt that, with the disappearance of war work and the increase of social life in the, district, the club should now exceed its old strength.
