Police,Court Remands Charged with the unlawful conversion of a light truck belonging to Mr William H. Spanhake and worth £SOO, last Saturday, Denny August Pei appeared in the Whakatane Police Court on Monday before Mr I. B. Hubbard, J.P., and was remanded for a week. Fred Kowhai, charged with assaulting Charles G. Bradshaw at Auckland on January 24 last, was similarly dealt with. St John Cadet Evening An altogether delightful evening was spent by St Johp Ambulance and Nursing cadets last week in games and dancing interspersed with concert items. Items were: Song, Cadet M. Guptall; instrument tal trio, Janice, Roger and Graham Bell; piano duet, J. Bell and Y. Kenyon; play, V. and P. Murphy, R. and E. Dockray, O. Ranby; recitations, M. Mahy and F. Wilson; hornpipe, J. Bell; piano duet, V. and P. Murphy; accident demonstration, E. Dockray, T. Windley, B. Taylor, A. Taylor, J. Kilgour, M. Morice; tap dance, N. Kilgour (pianist, R. Wheeler); chorus, Cadet Nursing Division. Gifts To Hospital Miss K. Miller, matron of the District Hospital, Whakatane, has acknowledged the following gifts to the institution received during July: Lemons, Mesdames K. Knight, E. D. Sheat and Mrs McCormick, Mr Langenberger, Thornton and Whai katane Women’s Institutes; Jellies, Druids’ Lodge; Flowers, Mr Sladden, Whakatane W. 1.; Comics, Mesdames Dignan and Combes, Mr C. Patterson, Young New Zealanders’ Club; Magazines and Books, Mesdames H. C. Alexander, Parkinson, Combes, Misses B. and J. Mundy, Mr Gilbert, John Knights; Fruit,. Mrs Campbell; Children’s Clothing, Mrs M. Hayward, Old Uniforms, Mrs C, A. Le Lievre. Ohope W.I. Meeting At the monthly meeting ’of the Ohope Women’s Institute there was a very good attendance and four new members were welcomed. Things went with a swing, and much business was done,; including plans for a Children’s Party at Xmas. It is planned to have a special bring and buy sale in aid of the Institute’s funds. More details are to be discussed at next meeting. The usual bring and buy stall was presided over by Mrs Dickson, and the afternoon broke up with a sing song round the piano. Competition winners:— Mrs Armstrong, best jar of marmalade; Mrs White, best handkerchief from salt bag. Manawahe W.I. There was a fair attendance at the. August meeting of the Manawahe Women’s Institute last week.. Mrs Bowden presided. The roll call* “Limerick on Your Neighbour,” brought forth quite a lot of hidden, talent and merriment. After the discussion, on the business to hand; the report on the W.I. Conference at Wellington was given by the Relegate. A pleasant afternoon was brought to a close with a dainty afternoon tea served by Mesdames Morice and F. Drabble. Competitions for the day:— Best shrub: Mrs King 1, Mrs Bowden 2. Best flower: Mrs Thompson 1, Mrs Mikkelsen 2. Eggless fruit cake: Mrs Bowes 1, Mrs Bowden 2.
