Borough Will Approve Tawa For Garages And Other Outbuildings
As the only means of giving people a chance to erect garages and other necessary outbuildings, the Whakatane Borough Council on Monday night deputed its finance committee to draft a by-law permitting the use of tawa in such buildings. When the suggestion that tawa be permitted to be used for such purposes came before the meeting, Cr W. Sullivan said he did not-see why tawa should not be used for outbuildings, provided it had two coats of creosote. He understood a regulation was likely to be gazetted soon that no timber - other than certain grades be used in that class of work. Mr F. W. Lysaght,'Borough building inspector, gave it as his opinion that the timber should be treated at the mills. Otherwise it would be difficult to .check. Cr A. D. O’Rourke said he thought there should be some guarantee the public should get a fair deal for its money. The Mayor said that could not be written into a by-law, but treatment should be stipulated.
