Thursday Night’s Hunt Club Ball

(By “Mary Lou”) Quiet dignity of formal dress, coupled with plenty of informal fun went to make the Whakatane Hunt Ball held in the Winter Show Building on Thursday night, one of the most successful entertainments of the year. A sumptuous buffet supper and a really good claret cup combined very well. The Host and Hostess of the evening were the Ward Master and his wife, Mr and Mrs G. D. Fogerty, and Mr G. Symmans acted as Master of Ceremonies. The whole interior of the building had been completely transformed with Nikau palm leaves and Punga fronds on the walls and seating accommodation arranged in small courts made with brush fences. Altogether the hall, with its myriad coloured streamers, balloons and all the refreshing greenery brought artistry and colour into satisfying harmony with the dominant suggestion of the great outdoors. * Supper served buffet style, offered everything the . discriminating palate could desire from roast pork and poultry, fruit salad and ~ all the trimmings, down to delicious cakes and savouries. The claret bowl was well patronised besides. A well-varied programme gave patrons a good choice, with dances for young and not-so-young, though the floor was a little crowded everyone had a really enjoyable time. Freddie Burt with his orchestra really excelled himself and the standard of his music, new and not so new, left absolutely no loophole for criticism.
