Last Survivor Of Maori
Wars Dies At Tarawera “A chapter in New Zealand’s history was closed with the passing of Mr Thomas Baker, of Tarawera, early last month,” said the Minister of Social Security (Mr Parry) recently. Mr Baker was the last' survivor of the Maori Wars, and had; a distinguished i;ecord in the service of his country, said Mr Parry. He was born at Paekakariki on November 5, 1853, and had an active and interesting connection with the early Maori Wars, having joined the Armed Constabulary in 1869 under Colonel Whitmore and having Served under Maj 6rßoberts ‘at Patea and in the Urewera country. Altogether,. Mr Baker, the last surviving holder of the New Zealand ' War Medal, served his country from 1869 to 1874. ' . “He had enjoyed excellent health until a very advanced age, and was a living exemplification of the hardiness of the New Zealand pioneer,” said Mr Parry.
