Strange Launch Fails To Enter Harbour With Tricky Sea Running
“He’ll be pretty cheeky if he tackles the harbour with this sea running,” was the comment of the Harbourmaster, Capt G. Carey, as he and a few others watched the efforts of a strange launch to negotiate the entrance to the Whakatane harbour last week.
The incident happened when a particularly heavy sea was running and the tide about the bar running in many vagrant currents. This launch appeared to be making desperate attempts to enter, and would make tentative circles to try and catch the right sea to come in. On one occasion it was nearly swung into the treacherous rocks beside the channel.
All this in spite of the “keep-out” signals hoisted. Emergency measures were prepared, then all of a sudden the unknown abandoned his attempt and made off out to sea, it is thought to the Opotiki harbour.
