Thornton Women’s Institute Donation To U.N. Appeal

The monthly meeting of the Thornton Women’s Institute was held last Thursday, Mrs Ducker presiding. After the Aspirations were read, members stood in silence in sympathy with two members recently bereaved. The delegates letter was read on the recent Council meeting. Business was discussed, it was decided that the Institute give £1 10s to the United Nations Appeal. Mrs Sheat offered to pack this month’s’food parcel to Linte. A wall competiiton, arranged by Mrs Sheat was won by Mrs Jones; Mrs Walker won the raffle in aid of general funds. Members were interested in a demonstration of fairisle knitting. Competition winners were:— Tea cosy: Mrs Jones 1, Mrs Checkley 2. Decorated billy: Mrs Ducker 1, Mrs Walker 2. Savoury meat tart: Mrs Gardner 1, Mrs D. Branch 2. Best flower: Mrs Ducker 1, Mrs D. Branch 2. Best vegetable: Mrs Sheat 1, Mrs D. Branch 2. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames- Checkley and Spence.
